Hi everyone,

Welcome to my substack column: Eye on Eurasia! As I embark on some new endeavors, I look forward to sharing with you my insights about a region of the world I have passionately followed for many decades. My goal is to identify and discuss important geopolitical developments in Eurasia, including new trends in diplomacy, warfare and technology that I see emerging in the ‘Back of Beyond.’ This term was coined by Sir Fitzroy Maclean an avid participant in the Great Game that was immortalized in his book Eastern Approaches.

Eye on Eurasia will focus on many of the same areas that shaped Maclean’s life and my own career in my journeys to the "‘Back of Beyond’. Initially Eye on Eurasia will address various aspects of the Russia-Ukraine war, the geopolitics of the Black Sea region and other trends occureing in Russia’s imperial borderlands. Over time though I aspire to cover other parts of the world as I expand my analytical horizons, and hopefully yours.
